Leos overcame Burley to go 7 games unbeaten

Merit League action returned to Crag Lane, and despite the distractions of Super Saturday and the 2nd half of the Ski Season Leos were able to field 2 sides with the 2s keeping the core of players that have produced the goods over the past few weeks along with the returning Big Dave Robinson after his trip to seek inspiration in the Colosseum last weekend and Mong finally making his 2s debut.

Burley turned up with a cast of 1000s which may be due to the lack of 1st team league action across Yorkshire this weekend but not to be daunted Leos set to their T&P warm up with gusto. With Billy Marsh and his glass back providing management duties from the sidelines the team went into the final huddle in confident mood.

This confidence wasn't missed place with the pack starting well taking the Burley scrum on and getting a nudge on early. From the resulting penalties the ball was kicked to the corner and following a further infringement Max Sears took the quick tap to dart through and finish from 20 metres out. Leos continued to dominate the forward exchanges and as the ball was moved from one side to another Connor made the break before link play between Porter and Martin sent James Lund clear to canter in to the corner. With the 2nd try in the bag it was noticeable to see Burley's bench diminishing in numbers as some drifted away to the comfort of beer and a screen to watch the rugby.

Leos were playing with a good mixture of forward grunt and guile in the backs but the next try was pure grunt from a lineout drive and then the obligatory pick and goes from Guy and Dave "Soft Scope" Llewellyn it was left to Chairman Dave Robinson to power his way through the remaining would be tacklers to crash over from a ever extending distance. With Leos in full flow another score followed from a multi phase attack and from a good support line from one of our double barreled student recruits MPH went over in the corner for the 4th of the day. With Burley being stretched by the variety in Leos attack there was a yawning gap on the blind side for Max to slip through for a 2nd sniping try of the day - not bad for someone who wanted to cry off at 11am - thankfully for Max peer pressure still has a place in this modern PC world. This bought the 1st half to a close with Leos holding a comfortable lead and the emphasis in the huddle was on keeping a 0 on the scoreboard and fronting up for the next 10 minutes.

Leos started the half exactly how they had finished the first on the front foot before moving the ball wide out to give James Lund the opportunity to open his gangly legs to go over for his 2nd try of the day another nail in Mark Winters hopes of finishing the season top try scorer for Leos from Unilever.

The 2nd half went on scoreless despite the rugby still being played at a ferocious pace but with the conditions into the face of Leos it made getting out of their own half not as easy as it was in the 1st half and credit must go to Burley for continuing to battle for the full 80 minutes.

There could and should have been more scores but with Archie Pine-Coffin joining the extensive group of Leos butchers when failing to put away Chris in a classic 2 on 1 before the 3rd of the double barreled clan Gillman-Wells just kept on going when already across the tryline only to get tackled and knock the ball on when grounding...(insert own abuse here).

The game came to a close with a comfortable 32-0 victory making it 7 games won in a row for the 2s since the start of February and as one run continued on the hallowed Crag Lane turf another came to an abrupt end in Dublin...but as they say you can't win them all.
