Season Opener -Saturday 30th August
Posted Tuesday, August 26 2008 by shield1977
After a long and successful pre season, under Director of Rugby Simon Worrall,Leos are looking forward to competitive action this sat, when they welcome Percy Park RUFC,from North Shields to Crag Lane, for a pre season friendly.Percy Park, play in Northumberland and Durham 1 and after just missing promotion last season, will start the new season as favourites to go up.Indeed, they have realistic ambitions of returning to the National Leagues.

Leos retain the vast majority of last years squad, although some have trained with more regularity than others.A number of new and promising players have been attracted, who will be immediately pushing for first team places,as a couple of regulars will be missing the early games.Percy Park plan to bring some 35 players, together with supporters, for a weekend of 'bonding' and will be accommodated in on suite accommodation at Crag Lane, lovingly prepared by Chris Hall.New Vice Chairman Howellsey, has been put in charge of the after match BBQ,whilst rumours of bacon shortages are already circulating in north Leeds, with Tony being spotted in the various supermarkets, buying up supplies, with which to feed our guests.

Fixtures 2008/2009
Posted Monday, May 26 2008 by shield1977
The somewhat unusual and complex fixture scenario for Yorkshire Division 2,has finally been resolved. The main complication, was that Redcar, who were moved into Yorks Div 1,for a season, finished in bottom place, but have opted to return to the Northumberland/Durham leagues, rather than remain in Yorkshire. In effect therefore, only one side,Huddersfield YMCA,could be relegated into Yorks 2.No other side from Northumberland/Durham were prepared to undertake the extra travel,so it has been decided that next season,Yorks Division 2,will comprise of 11 teams.

Old Brods and Skipton were of course promoted, whilst West Park Leeds and Goole were relegated. So next season, the eight remaining sides,Leo's,Pocklington,Yarnbury,Wheatley Hills,North Ribblesdale,Ripon,Knottingley and Dinnington, will be joined by Huddersfield YMCA,relegated from Yorks 2.The two promoted teams from Yorks 3,are Castleford and Moortown.Leo's start their league season on sat. 13 Sept, with an away fixture at Pocklington.

In late season fixtures,Hartbury College (effectively Gloucester Academy),beat Wheatley Hills at Twickenham by 83 - 5,in the Senior Vase, whilst in the all Yorkshire Junior Vase Final,Castleford beat Doncaster Phoenix 14 - 11.Sandal beat Old Brods 22 - 5 in the Yorkshire Shield final, whilst in a Play Off game,Ilkley beat Northern 28 - 24,to secure promotion from Yorks 1,to the North East league, with York being relegated from the North East,to Yorks 1.With Sandal promoted as Champions of Yorks 1,Glossop,from the MIdlands League have requested a transfer into Yorkshire and so will make up the twelth team in Yorks 1.

Further news on pre season training and pre season friendley fixtures will follow shortly.

No May Day Sevens this year
Posted Monday, April 21 2008 by Cadgey
Unfortunately, Leos will not be hosting our annual sevens competition this year on May Bank Holiday.

We plan to relaunch the competition next year on the Sunday instead of the Monday - so we hope to see you in 2009!
Leos demolish West Park Leeds
Posted Saturday, April 19 2008 by shield1977
Leos continued there tremendous form following last weeks victory against Wheatley Hills, with another superb performance today, beating West Park Leeds by 32-12 at the sycamores.

This vital win ensured we will continue to be playing in Yorkshire Division 2 next season and meant that following todays other results Goole are relegated along with West Park Leeds to Yorkshire Division 3.

Leos were cheered on by a large band of travelling supporters who outnumbered the home support and they did the club proud with this fine win.

Turning round at half time leading 17-12 and with the wind at their backs,we monopolised possession and were fully worthy of this victory.Like last week this was once more a real team performance with every player playing his part.

Match report can be viewed on the above link

Results to day:

Dinnington 13 - 3 Pocklington
Ripon 3 - 33 Old Brodleians
Skipton 11 - 7 North Ribblesdale
West Park Leeds 12 - 32 Leodiensians
Wheatley Hills 36 - 0 Knottingley
Yarnbury 42 - 7 Goole

West Park Leeds v Leos Saturday 19th April
Posted Wednesday, April 16 2008 by shield1977
Leos travel the short distance to Bramhope on Saturday in the final league fixture of the season and one which is of vital importance to the club.
Leos need a victory to secure their safety and avoid joining west park in being relegated next season to Yorkshire Division 3.

For the hosts this will be their last fixture played out of their old clubhouse, so a good size crowd is anticipated for this important game.
Kick off at the sycamores is 3.00pm.

As many Leos will be aware our long standing groundsman Paul Marshall is retiring on saturday after giving so many years devotion to the club.Whilst he will not be at West Park Leeds on saturday, he will instead be preparing the 1st team pitch for the last time for the second team fixture at crag lane, on behalf of all Leos we thank him for his immense contribution to the club. There will clearly be further recognisition and tributes to Paul in the near future,as his work and loyalty to the club are unsurpassed.

Awesome Leos Outgun Wheatley Hills
Posted Sunday, April 13 2008 by shield1977
Leos produced a performance of the highest quality to outplay a Wheatley Hills side who had not been beaten since christmas and who have reached the final of the EDF senior vase at twickenham.

Leos new the magnitude of their task and were magnificant and fully worthy of this comprehensive victory by 18-0, scoring 3 tries.

Thw whole 1st team squad were "up for the game" and this superb victory has now given us the chance to remain in Yorkshire division 2 next season.

The reality is that our destination is in our own hands and we now need to win our final game of the season at local rivals west park leeds on saturday.

Well done to the team on producing a performance which was by far the best of the season.
All 18 leos players were worthy of the man of the match award and deserve a mention alongside coach simon worrall who galvanised the team:
Brown, Knibbs, Frear, Pearson, Pears, Bouvet, Lynch, Connell, Forton, Beebs, Fforde, Myerscough, Burdon, Peycke, Varley, Grant, Sanity, Bindloss

We must now produce the same performance on saturday at west park.
The squad once more knows the significance of the game which is the most important since our game in the vase final 4 years ago.

Leos v Wheatley Hills
Posted Wednesday, April 9 2008 by shield1977
Leos welcome high flying Wheatley Hills to crag lane this Saturday for a league fixture where a win is absolutely vital to the club.

The visitors are having a successful season and proudly follow the yorkshire tradition over the past few years, of being in the final of the EDF Senior Vase at Twickenham where they play currently unbeaten Hartpury College from Gloucester on May 10th.

We are currently second from bottom of the league and a win is vital for us to remain in Yorkshire 2 next season.
The team are well aware of the challenge that lies ahead on saturday and the side have been training hard following a great performance the previous week against Skipton.

A close encounter is expected and the chaiman urges as many Leos as possible to attend the match on Saturday kick off 3.00pm to cheer on the lads.

Leos suffer agonising defeat to Skipton
Posted Thursday, April 3 2008 by shield1977
Leos produced a superb team performance in atrocious weather conditions last saturday, but agonisingly lost by a single point 16-17 to Skipton enabling the visitors to clinch the second promotion place to Yorkshire1

This was a true test of character and skipton readily acknowledged that this was one of their hardest games for them of the season.
As has been confirmed all season there is very little difference between all the teams in this division and this defeat has pushed us deep into the relgation zone.

We have 2 games left against Wheatley Hills at home and West Park Leeds away.

In reality we need to win both games to remain in Yorkshire 2.
There is no question that if we can produce the same team performance for these games as we did against Skipton we are more than capable of winning both games.

The main thing now is for all the senior members of the squad to make sure they are available for these 2 very important games which are vital to the club.
Leos v Skipton Saturday 30th March
Posted Friday, March 28 2008 by shield1977
Leos welcome Skipton to Crag Lane tomorrow with both sides looking for a victory for different reasons.

A win for Skipton will secure promotion to Yorkshire 1 whilst Leos need a victory to move away from the relegation zone.

This clearly is a very important game for Leos and all support is especially welcome to cheer on the lads kick off is 3.00pm

Whilst Skipton will come into the game as favourites, Leos 1st team squad have prepared well for the game and field a side which we feel confident can cause an upset to the form book.
Leos lose to Ripon
Posted Saturday, March 8 2008 by shield1977
Leos once more underperformed in this league fixture at Ripon today, losing by 24 -8 against a team we could and should have beaten.

No excuses Ripon were worthy of this victory and clearly were far more motivated to secure the points to remain in Yorkshire division 2 next season.

For the first time we have now been dragged into the relegation battle and we have 3 remaining games to pull ourselves clear.
2 homes games against Skipton and Wheatley Hills followed by a final fixture away against West Park Leeds.

We have the players and resources to gain the required points to secure safety. The reality is that we have become complacent and have too many key players who have not made themselves available for selection over the past few months.

The time has come to show commitment to the skipper and club in the final month of the season to get the results we need.We are more than capable of achieving this but only if we get our senior team out on the park. Our destiny is in our own hands.

Leos suffer defeat against League Champions
Posted Sunday, March 2 2008 by shield1977
Leos produced a determined battling display against league champions Old Brodleians at Crag Lane but were finally beaten by 5-20.
This victory confirmed Brods being crowned Yorkshire 2 champions, but they were made to work hard for this win, giving Leos confidence and a good platform for the remaining 4 league fixtures of the season.

Leos suffer comprehensive defeat at North Ribblesdale
Posted Saturday, February 16 2008 by shield1977
This eagerly anticipated league fixture at Settle this afternoon proved to be a severe anti climax, due to the fact that the late withdrawal of 4 key members of the Leos pack through varying reasons that comprehensively outplayed Pocklington the previous week, meant that Leos took the field with a second string pack who were no match for the Ribblesdale forwards.

Take nothing away from North Ribb as they were well worthy of this 39-6 victory as they monopolised possession throughout the 80 miniutes.
Never mind what might have been, the plain facts are that by fielding an understrength side against North Ribblesdale who have one of the strongest packs in the league, meant that the "writing was on the wall" even before kick off and this proved to be the case.

Yes there were some strong performances from the backs, well led by Winter and Porter and some heroic defending from Russ Brown, but if you are starved of possession, then there is a limit to what can be done.

Next weekend we have a break from league fixtures which allows for us to regroup and support Nick Burdon in preparation for the visit of league leaders Old Brods to Crag Lane in a fortnight.

If we are able to field a full strength side as has been shown over the season, then we are a match for any side, including Old Brods.

Lets make sure we put some hard work in on the training field, confirm our availabilty and become the first league side this season to inflict a defeat on Old Brods. They themselves will come to Crag Lane remembering the defeat we inflicted upon them in the vase cup a couple of seasons ago.

Leos 30 v Pocklington 12
Posted Tuesday, February 12 2008 by shield1977
What a difference a week makes!!
Leos returned to winning ways on saturday with a great team performance, by totally outplaying a Pocklington side by 30-12 and severly denting any chances that the visitors had of securing the second promotion place behind Old Brods.
This was more like the Leos who must be a "pools panel nightmare"!!! for predicting the right result, because on our day as illustrated by this resounding victory, we are more than a match for any side.
Well done to all the squad for a great victory.

Leos 5 v Knottingley 18
Posted Saturday, January 26 2008 by shield1977
Leos playing against the elements and into a strong wind turned round at half time leading by 5-3, thanks to a try by hooker Jim Forton and an extremely competent team display.

With the elements and strong wind at their backs this should have resulted in a resounding victory, but the reality was that Leos produced a second half performance which without question was their worst 40 minutes of the season and gifted the visitors a much needed victory to secure the 2 points.

Make no mistake Knottingley thoroughly deserved this win, as they monopolised possession in the second half and did not allow Leos to utilise the elements.

For Leos there can be no excuses and the reality was that despite a strong back line they were deprived of possession, and the reality is that the pack never fronted up and were left well short.

The best two forwards were undoubtedly Tim FForde and Jim Forton who were both yellow carded in the second half to leave Leos battling with 13 players which ultimately decided the game.

The plain facts are that on our day Leos are capable of beating the very best, and at worst as demonstrated today came off second best against a very average Knottingley side.

Leos on todays performance seem to be content with mid/low table mediocracy. With greater conviction we are able to achieve far more and with the next league game in 2 weeks time at home to Pocklington the coaching staff and captain need to put some hard work together on the training field to unleash the potential which exists within the camp but on todays performance was never shown.

Leos beat Moortown in "friendly" fixture
Posted Monday, January 14 2008 by shield1977
Without a league fixture at the weekend,Leo's played Moortown in a friendly at Far Moss and came away with a 24 - 10 success. Two first half tries from Brown and a conversion from Bouvet, gave Leo's a 12 - 0 half time lead, with second half scores from Connell and Beck and a further conversion from Bouvet.Moortown responded with two tries of their own,via their useful back row.

It was another successful weekend for the club, with the seconds, thirds and fourths all securing victories.

Next week sees a return to league action, with the firsts travelling to Goole, who lie just below us in the table. They are however difficult to beat at home,as was demonstrated this weekend, when in a rearranged league fixture, they pipped high flying Pocklington,by 18 - 15.

Leos produced a festive season performance to defeat Yarnbury at Horsforth this afternoon by 15-10 in the league and avenge their defeat by the hosts at crag lane some 4 weeks ago.

This was the best away performance by the Leos 1st XV all season and they thoroughly deserved a victory which was ultimately far more convincing than the final score line suggests.

Leos once more lost out in the league this afternoon away at Wheatley Hills by 20-12.

As has been seen over the past few years, this is an extremely competitive league and this season has proved no different.

Today proved that that there was very little difference between the abilities of the two sides, but the result was ultimately decided on the hosts taking their chances when it mattered most.

Ilkley prove too strong for Leos in EDF Senior Vase Cup
Posted Saturday, November 17 2007 by shield1977
Despite a spirited display by Leos, they came up today against a strong all round Ilkey side who fully justified their victory at crag lane by 41-10 and marched on to the 4th round of the EDF Senior vase Cup Competitition.

The game was played throughout in a hard clean fought nature and whilst Leos held there own for periods of the game, the all round pace of the Ilkley side whose strong form of late has propelled them into second place of the Yorkhire Division 1, proved ultimately the deciding factor of this game.

On this showing Ilkey will have a great chance of progressing far in this competition, with sights firmly set on Twickenham.

Credit must be given to Yarnbury whose powerful forwards won the day, restricting Leos possession in the second half and justifying the 2 points.

Leo's rugby enjoyed a second successive 'full house' at the weekend. The first XV came away with a narrow 18 - 17 victory at Dinnington, whilst the seconds enjoyed a comfortable 46 - 7 victory at home,in a game reduced because of a serious knee injury to a Dinnington player.

The thirds came away with a victory,but little else,in a 45 - 0 success at Ossett,whilst a young fourth team,defeated Harrogate Waifs and Strays,21 - 7.

Tickets for the Live Music Night on sat 17 Nov,are now in short supply, and soon will only be available via e bay.The last few can be secured from the Clubhouse over the weekend.
Obituary - Nick Ketteringham
Posted Sunday, November 4 2007 by shield1977
It is with great sadness that Leos have to report the death of Nick Ketteringham.
The "older" Leos will remember Nick as a charismatic character who had a zest for life and very much lived life to the full.
He came to the Leos in the 1980's and was an accomplished scrum half where he captained the second XV for a season.

Dinnington 1st XV 17 v Leos 1st XV 18
Posted Saturday, November 3 2007 by shield1977
In what was another pulsating league encounter Leos came away victors today by the narrowest of margins 18-17.

Leos turned around at half-time down by 11-17 and with the strong wind in the favour of the hosts in the second half it was going to be a challenge to come away with the 2 points. But the spirit discipline and commitment of the Leos side saw them through. For Dinnington there significant lack of discipline with 2 yellow cards and a red on the final whistle ultimately cost them the game.

Leos back to winning ways in EDF Senior Vase
Posted Sunday, October 14 2007 by shield1977
Leos produced a great performance to progress to the 3rd round of the EDF Senior Vase when they beat a determined Southport side by 15-6.
Once more Leos came back to form when it mattered in the cup, helped by the "return of the cavalry" of a number of senior members of the squad.
Southport with home advantage and buoyed on by a large crowd could not quite match the skills and experience of a good Leos side which once more reflects well on the side and indeed on the overall standard of rugby played in Yorkshire 2.
Well done to all on what was a long but memorable day.

Tim Heaton
Posted Saturday, September 29 2007 by shield1977
Just a short note of congratulations to Tim Heaton who for the past 3 seasons has been an integral part of the Leos 1stXV. Playing at flank forward he contributed significantly in many Leos vicories and was an integral part of the back row unit that had such a successful run in the Powergen Junior vase in 2005/2006.Leos efforts of reaching Twickenham for a second time that year were thwarted in the semi final in an absolutely pulsating encounter away at Dorking, who just ran out winners in extra time and who went on to win the final comfortable.Tim's contribution that day were immense and arguably one of his finest games of rugby played for the club.

At the tender age of 22 with the full support of the club, Tim decided this season to see if he could forward his rugby career and joined Harrogate who play in National Division 3 North.
Leos are delighted to note that Tim has stepped up to the mark and made his 1st XV debut against Fylde 2 weeks ago and was acclaimed man of the match. He played last week against Preston Grasshoppers and is in the team for todays encounter with Caldy. It looks like Tim has already made himself a regular and on behalf of his old team mates-well done.

Leos encounter league defeat at Skipton

Leos were unable to handle a well organised Skipton team who having won promotion from Division 3 last season on this showing look strong candidates for promotion again this season.

Leos with a much changed side from the previous weeks victory over west park, whilst holding their own in the pack, took many wrong options in the threequarter allowing the home side to run out convincing winners by 40-7.

This Saturday 8th September is the start of the league fixtures as Leos travel to newly promoted Skipton in what is sure to be a close encounter.

Following todays resounding win over local rivals West Park Leeds in the EDF Senior Vase, Leos will travel to Skipton full of confidence under the leadership of new 1st XV captain Nick Burden.

Skipton were worthy Yorkshire 3 champions last year and have added to there squad of players this year. They have also started the season in tremendous form by beating Pocklington who were supposed to be one of the favourites for promotion from Yorkshire Division 2 this season, by a thumping 69-10 in the EDF Senior Vase, so we are under no illusions that we will need to play to the best of our abilities to come away with the 2 points.

Kick off is 3.00pm and all Leos support like today is welcome and needed.

Rest of the fixtures in yorkshire 2 are as below:

Leos gained a tremendously impressive victory by beating West Park Leeds 23-14 this afternoon in the first round of the EDF Senior Vase away at the sycamores

The platform was set by a stirling performance by the Leos pack ably led by new skipper Nick Burdon, who stormed into a 20 points lead by the 35th minute through a penalty try and 2 further tries by the forwards and despite a dogged fighback by the homeside,Leos were worthy winners of this local derby.

Andy Patrick, a sad loss.
Posted Monday, August 6 2007 by scotty
Leo's lost a celebrated ex-player at the weekend with the death of Andy Patrick, along with his father and two friends in a helicopter crash in The Lake District. Our thoughts go out to Andy's wife Jill and their two daughters, and obviously his mother. Andy joined Leo's as a centre with a big reputation, playing regularly for the first team before reverting to social rugby in the 3rds and 4ths. Throughout his time at Leo's Andy was a larger than life character both on an off the field before retiring far too early to concentrate on the family building firm.
More details will be posted as soon as they are available

Pre Season Training moves to Mondays and Wednesdays
Posted Friday, July 27 2007 by jamesdeb
Important announcement:

Starting from Monday 30th of July and until further notice (probably around the end of August), Leos pre-season training will move to Monday and Wednesday nights.

Usual time (7:00 prompt) and usual place (Cragg Lane).

The change has been made necessary in order that our new coach, Simon Worall, can keep to his own training/playing committments.

Please make every effort to attend both Monday and Wednesday evening sessions from now on. If you haven't made it down yet this summer, make sure you get down as soon as possible. All those who have taken part in training up to now will agree that the sessions are excellent, well organised and, most importantly, good fun. As ever, the more numbers we get down, the more constructive sessions we can have.

First pre-season games are only four weeks away so the 2007/08 season is approaching fast. Don't get caught out!

See at training!

New Players Welcome +Pre Season Training
Posted Friday, June 8 2007 by shield1977
Leos are embarking on an ambitious development plan to realise the clubs aspirations of returning to Twickenham to win a further trophy and in developing the profile of the club in winning promotion from Yorkshire Division 2.

In order to realise these realistic goals we are actively looking to recruit players at all levels but particularly at a senior level.

The club already has a good infrastructure in place, with quality rugby pitches, floodlights, superb clubhouse and changing facilities together with the nucleus of a great team who are determined to achieve these goals under the guidance of new 1st XV skipper Nick Burden.

With the backing of club officials and senior members this is an exciting time to join a forward thinking rugby club.

Leos would also be pleased to hear from any players who are relocating to Leeds where any help and support will be readily made available.

The club runs 4 teams each saturday plus a highly successful ladies team and also a great mini and junior section.

Pre season training has just begun and for the next month meeting at roundhay park car park at the top of the park,(what used to be called the mansion car park of the mansion hotel) near to the fox public house each Tuesday at 7.00pm.

Announcement From Leos Club President
Posted Sunday, May 6 2007 by shield1977
Mr Jim Collard President of Leodiensian RUFC announces the retirement from rugby of club captain Dan Eddie and the election of new skipper Nick Burden for season 2007-2008.

Dan Eddie has been club captain for the past 8 seasons, in addition to his role of Director of Rugby and he has been one of the best captains the club has had since records began back in 1923.

Dan's great leadership and experience has been an inspiration to all and the biggest achievement he brought to the club was when he orchestrated Leos winning the Powergen Junior Vase at Twickenham in 2003-2004.This has been the greatest achievement in the clubs history and whilst this was a fantastic team performance by a superb group of players, Dan Eddie was undoubtedly the pinnacle player in winning this competition for Leos on the hallow turf of Twickenham.
Players and members will never forget such a fantastic achievement and experience.

There will be further acknowledgements to Dan Eddie from the club to recognise his great contribution in due course.

Jim Collard also announces the official retiremnt from 1st XV rugby of great stalwart Jon Eagle.Jon's contribution to Leos rugby has been immense and his track record of achievements in rugby have been unsurpassed by a Leos player.

Jon first played rugby for Leos 1st XV in the late 1970's before joining Headingley,Leeds Tykes,Harlequins and also representing Yorkshire and England.Jon is one of the very few Leos who has gone on to play and represent his country with such high esteem.

Jon returned to Leos a number of years ago and his outstanding pace and qualities were an inspiration to all and he along with Dan Eddie was a major driving force behing the Powergen Junior Vase glory.

Jon at the tender age of__??!!! has officially decided to retire from 1st XV Rugby but may still play the occassional game for the vets.

To Jon Eagle like Dan Eddie, thank you for your immense contribution to the Leos and rugby.
