Despite the pre-match motivational cuddling, Leos didn’t really turn up for the first half, allowing Bramley to run in three tries without reply. The Leos highlights from the opening 40 minutes were the back row tackling (of which there was lots), Blakey’s clearance kicks (again, lots), Billy “don’t be a hero’s” awesome counter attack work, and some big running from Gary, Polly and the bearded Carlos.
The scrum functioned well all day, with the Leo’s front five holding firm, winning ball for the backs to work with. Unfortunately, the lack of a centre and having a front rower on the wing was making the difference.
Following some motivational words from Cadgey and a re-shuffle – Rob to centre, Poll to 8 and Gabes in at 9 - the second half brought around more of a contest, with the wizardly boot of the portly magician allowing Leos to play the majority of the game in the opposition’s half. Carlos and Goff were winning great ball from lineouts and the driving mauls were causing havoc in the Bramley defence. It was from one of these mauls that King Richard of Scott, ably assisted by 7 forwards and Jim “I can’t be expected to stand on the wing and not get involved” Capell was forced over the line for a deserved score. Scotty expertly slotted the extras from out wide.
Dr George and Rob were having a tackle-tastic second half against the quick Bramley backs – and penalties were being conceded by the away team at the breakdown. Intelligent kicking and committed chasing led to a lineout deep in the Bramley 22. Great ball was once again secured from the lineout – bosh-tastic clearing up from Si H and some great mauling work from the forwards saw the Leos pack inching towards the try line. Bramley dragged the maul down and a quick tap and some burrowing from Gav brought about the second Leos try – unfortunately too wide out for a successful conversion.
The game ended soon after with Bramley deservedly victorious 26 – 12, but with Leos finishing on a positive note. No notable shower scenes to talk of, which was disappointing, but the whole Bramley team stuck around for a few pints (something our own and other teams could learn from) and were rewarded when two attractive, blond paramedics managed to get their ambulance stuck on the big pitch when trying to collect an injured 2nd teamer.
Next week is a trip to Cas-Vegas – hopefully Scotty is already working on some casino based lineout calls!
