The league reorganisation has not helped Leo’s and whilst a plethora of local fixtures might help from a travel and administration point of view they certainly don’t beguile the Leo’s social regulars and not so regulars.
Spirit is never lacking, although fitness, fancy moves, pace and props often are. Scotty once again stepped forward to loose-head with James H and Cadgey forming a competitive front row. The back row was stout and combative rather than athletic, although debut boy Phil Stewart added some sting later in the game. Cadgey’s nephew added pace at nine but the back line was not as fast as their rapid opponents. So, once again an afternoon of chasing shadows ensued interspersed with some up the jumper returns from the home side. Possession remained at a premium but the pack worked hard to drive upfield with Neil and Andy S to the fore. With the ball in hand the backs were often dangerous but too often turned over or forced to kick away possession through lack of support. Tries were leaked on a regular basis as the well organised, fit and enthusiastic Mods ran at will.
After a half time spirit raising chat from stand in skipper Cadgey the home side had one of their better spells. This essentially relied upon getting hold of the ball and not letting Mods have any sight of it, at all. Driving mauls, with Scotty and Cadgey at the wheel made good yards before the close quarters charges from Kenroy Tom C and the backs kept things tight. Eventually Phil the Power powered over out wide and Scotty curled over the extras. Well beaten again, but not nilled again. With a modicum of pride restored Leo’s stuck gamely to Plan A and the game, well controlled by The Fozaree and played in good spirits, ebbed and slowed before the tide of Mods washed the home side away.
