Leos romp to 10 try victory over local rivals Roundhegians.

Leos welcomed local rival Roundhegians to crag lane in the opening game of the league campaign.

The visitors were promoted to Yorkshire division 2 having strolled to the Yorkshire 3 title last season losing only one game, by one point throughout

Leos have summered well under the guidance of coached Matt Greenwood and Simon Worrall. New skipper "big Dave" Robinson has got married and with the inclusion to the squad of returning hooker Jimmy Forton and the arrival of new recruits Jimmy Henry and Nick Wainwright, confidence is high in the Leos camp for a successful season.

There was a good crowd gathered as "Monty" Wainwright kicked off the game and it was Leos who showed all the early pressure but the roundhegians defence whilst severely tested kept their line intact.

On 8 minutes despite all the ball it was the visitors who took the lead when centre Tim Smith intercepted a loose ball and sprinted 60 metres to outpace the Leos defence. Mat Loughney kicked the conversion. Leos 0 Roundhegians 7

From this moment onwards there was only one side in the game as whilst Roundhegians were not a bad side they simply could not live with the Leos side who dominated every phase of the game.

On 12 minutes from a line out skipper Dave Robinson was driven over the line with Monty wainwright kicking a good conversion from out wide. Leos 7 Rondhegians 7

5 minutes later with Leos having all the ball and wainwright dictating field play a delightful move by henry, knibbs and lunn in the backs allowed centre Neil Liu to slice through the visiting defence and touchdown under the postsWinwright converted Leos 14 Roundhegians 7

On 25 minutes a line out 5 metres out was gathered by hooker jimmy forton who was driven over the line by a rampaging Leos pack Leos 19 Roundhegians 7

The pressure was unrelenting when 5 minutes later from another line out on the visitors line the ball was won by Lenny lane and the pack once more shoved the visitors back and again hooker jimmy forton dived over the line for his second try.Wainwright kicked the conversion from the touch line Leos 26 Roundhegians7

Half time could not come quick enough for the visitors to allow them time to regroup.

The second half maintained the same charge as the first. The backs were enjoying great possession and showing good turn of speed.

On 50 minutes from some good forward and backs interplay wainwright found a gap and sliced through the visitors defence. Leos 31 Roundhegians 7

The coaching staff made full use of the squad and replaced Haslam with Levitt, Jimmy Forton with Macca and Bindloss with Lunn.

On 60 minutes a great break by knibbs in the centre fed the ball to the supporting wainwright who slipped the ball to the ever supporting James Henry who scored under the posts.Wainwright converted; Leos 38 Roundhegians 7

On 65 minutes Neil Liu scored his second try of the game in what was a fantastic individual try showing great pace when from the half way line he sliced through the visitors now failing defence and scored under the posts.Wainwright converted Leos 45 Roundhegians 7

On 68 minutes Liu again showed brilliance of pace when again from his own half he cut through the middle and with the full back to beat passed the supporting Dave Barden who touched down under the postsWinwright converted Leos 52 Roundhegians 7

On 74 minutes the ball went through the hands of Henry knibbs and bindloss creating the overlap for winger stu baker to touch down out wide.Wainwright again kicked the conversion. Leos 59 Roundhegians 7

Finally in the last minute the ball was fed out wide again to Stuart baker who once more showed his speed to score again outside on the right. Leos 64 Roundhegians7

The referee blew his whistle for full time to the relief of the visiting supporters.

This was a tremendous team performance by Leos and will give much confidence to the sterner tests ahead starting next week in the second league fixture of the season at Skipton.
Credit must be given to Roundhegians who never gave up but found Leos in inspirational form.

For Leos the supporters club player of the match was a difficult decision as all 18 players were magnificent. However on a split decision the award went to Neil Liu who scored 2 great individual tries and his electric pace was a constant threat to the visitors.
