Despite the loss, Leos 1st XV walked off the pitch after a gruelling 80 minutes with their shoulders back and heads held high. The boys found themselves up against a Keighley side brimming with confidence, having not lost a game since September of last year and fully expecting to put a cricket score on the home side. Throughout the first half the visitors were unable to establish their usual position of ascendency due to a monumental defensive effort by Leos – particular mentions go to Ed Farmer and Jake Gardner whose outstanding roles in the first half cannot be understated.
Clinical phase play from Leos in the Keighley twenty two was eventually rewarded with a three point penalty courtesy of the boot of fly half Ed Farmer, midway through the first half. Unfortunately this 3-0 lead was erased on the stroke of half time by a clever snipe from the Keighley scrum half which led to a hard earned try for the visitors.
The second half saw an invigorated Keighley put in a dominant performance in which they scored four unanswered tries, thereby taking their unbeaten streak this season to fifteen matches. Throughout a very tough second half however, Leos remained enterprising, looking comfortable with ball in hand – on the day we simply lost to a side with a bit more firepower!
Special mention to Dave Harrison, who was rightly named Leos 1st XV man of the match.
