CJ+ had sacrificed himself on the altar of 2nd XV rugby so Cadgey lead the team, containing numerous relatives. For probably the first time this season Leo’s had all the right players in all the right positions, including debutant Tom Vigar at 8.
Leo’s were soon on the front foot and demonstrated excellent skill and patience to work the ball through phase after phase as Morley struggled to contain the waves of attack. Defend they did, bravely all afternoon, but eventually a small gap was found by Dave G and the Maltese Falcon swooped though for an early score. Tim L converted as Scotty was still flat out after some clearing activity. Possession was retained after the kick off and more hard graft from the pack tied in the home defence and the backs cut lose. Speed of pass was matched by speed of foot as Simon Cadge burst through a gap and pirouetted past defenders for a try out wide. Tim L added another 2 for good measure. Not to be out done Morley started to get back into the game with some strong running backs play which resulted in a try. This was followed by more pressure and a shamefully kicked three pointer! With the scores at 14-10 Leo’s needed to score next, and they did with a Cadge family full house as Senior Cadgey bulldozed over and Tim L kept up his 100% conversion rate. Leo’s were on the ascendancy and only greed or loose passes inhibited the score. Gav made a telling break before feeding Scotty with a hospital pass and Tim martin outspun himself in a mazy run that confused everyone.
The half time talk was for more of the same and not let Morley back into the game. True to form Leo’s let Morley back into the game and at 21-17 the visitors were somewhat perturbed. The pack calmed things down as the front five (Si H, Jim C, Cadgey, Scotty and Rob B) started to take balls against the head and control possession with audacious mauling. The back row was occasionally rampant but still the hospital pass was off-load of choice. Eventually the pressure told and Big Cadge Senior added his second try. Tim L retained the 100% record. Grant darted and dashed but couldn’t break through. Jon boshed and Billy scampered. Morley never gave up and scored again never letting Leo’s out of sight. More controlled pressure from the recycling Leo’s pack allowed Greedy Gav to score out wide and Tim lose his 100% record. This devastating blot on his copy book must have preyed on his mind as
when endeavouring a cheeky chip and chase clearance Tim’s next involvement in the game was to chip straight into the arms of a Morley forward. A 6 man overlap was then squandered by the home side who couldn’t believe their luck, Leo’s scrambling defence transgressed but a lengthy question and answer session between Dave G and Referee Parker allowed the defensive line to regroup and danger was repelled and victory secured. All the ingredients for a fine game of social rugby were present as two evenly matched sides played out a sporting but highly competitive fixture.
The appearance of a towelling dressing gown and designer patent leather sportsbag from Tom V were the only questionable events in an otherwise highly enjoyable afternoon.
