The squad surveyed the summer-like scene, and welcomed a Cleck side who had narrowly beaten them five weeks previously. Both teams warmed up gently, avoiding overheating too early, before the Refesaurus signalled the contest to begin.
As has been the pattern for a lot of the season the Leo’s pack fronted up well in a very competitive forward conflict. This week however, the backs looked well organised and dangerous behind the workhorses. Jewey ran the show for 10 minutes before going off with exhaustion and Joe Worsley took over at 10. Dean had already made use of quick ball and space to arc round the visitors defence to score under the posts and give Leo’s an early lead. Cleck were committed in the tackle and very competitive at the breakdown but Thommo, Big Steve and Si H were more than a match for them and good turnover ball was won to get the backs going time and again. The evergrey Tim Leslie tidied up well at the back and added massive yards to the clearance kicks, even making two, and yes count them, two tackles, as Leo’s kept out their lively visitors. Offensive defence from Ben also raised the spirits as an open and surprisingly skilful game developed. Tom Stubbley finished off a multi-phase move out wide before Cleck struck back with two well worked tries to edge 12-14 ahead. Leo’s drove back at them and with the pressure being applied the big Cleck lock lost patience with Si and gave him a slap. The Refesaurus removed him for 10 and Scotty calmed things down with a three pointer. Leo’s held a slender lead at the break as water was taken onboard and a few fresh faces added to the fray.
The pack set about their second half duties with aplomb. “Against the heads” and Scotty marshalled driving mauls pressed Cleck into their 22 before the backs cut loose with the rejuvenated Kenroy boshing through with enthusiastic support in numbers. Cleck transgressed again and Scotty popped over a three pointer to extend the lead a little. The lineouts were working well as JP and CJ grasped possession and Jake kept the backs lively. Ben and Kenroy added tough yards and were strong in defence as the home side kept the pace and pressure up with quick taps and forward support where even Batman got in on the act with a swooping support run and almost sidestep!
Eventually the pressure told and Kenroy was able to bosh over, with Scotty adding the extras and taking his Leo’s points tally past 1200. There was still time for some Cleck counter attacking and some excellent defence, particularly from JP, who was stomped on for his troubles. The excellent Refesaurus refrained from another carding and called the game to a most satisfactory conclusion.
