Had this been known alternative entertainment on the year’s sunniest afternoon may have been arranged by the Leo’s 4th XV regulars, who were completely overwhelmed by the speed, skill, support running and fitness of their far superior opposition. The sympathetic committee man who cheered us on and thanked us for coming “, as we’d not have had a game otherwise” was a kindly gesture to battered bruised and exhausted victims of this sleight of hand.
The pack fronted up well in the set plays with scrums secure and the Scotty-Winters lineout axis functioning but without possession the callow visitors were chasing shadows for much of the game. Heads never quite dropped although there were a few bouts of childish tetchiness as Leo’s were run ragged for most of the first half with Selby showing no mercy to their clearly inferior guests. At half time and the scoreboard ticking over, (yes, they had the scoreboard operator on duty, and took an entrance collection so clearly weren’t expecting Leo’s 4th XV!) the call for pride and prejudice self respect was issued by JP and this clarion call was heeded.
Ray put in the biggest hit of the afternoon, Ben started making breaks with his midfield runs and Guest Rob was revelling in the conflict, so much so that he boshed over under the posts as Leo’s made sure they didn’t get nilled. More good all-round play from the heartened visitors brought another try for Carl out wide before the home backs cut lose again to slap Leo’s down. Scotty began negotiating with the somewhat unsympathetic, but very good referee and the game eventually came to a premature end.
These things happen from time to time at this level. It was no fun for Leo’s and really cannot have been wholly satisfying for a far superior Selby side.
