Leo’s had some backs, a lot of backs in fact, but not enough forwards. The game was also to be played on wide expanse of the BIG PITCH, rather than the advantageous conditions round the back. Baildon warmed up with drills and organisation while Leo’s had a weigh off to decide who would be a line-out jumper alongside Stuey.
For the majority of the game it was an almost contest between a well drilled, organised and experienced team and a squad of disparate (then desperate) social rugby players who needed on-field leadership and organisation that was once again missing. CJ had assembled the troops, with another two debutants in Mike and Greg on the wings and whilst there was a lack of front rowers to make scrummaging competitive the resultant overwhelming defeat was unexpected. Missed tackles were exploited to expose the scrambling defence and the superior running lines, moves and support from the visitors told time and again. The forwards were out rucked repeatedly, and there was too much lost possession where with a little more application secure ball could have been provided to an exciting offensive back line including Blakey, The Power and The Nail. After the concession of a few tries Leo’s responded with the ever lively Tim Martin scorching in and Scotty adding the extras. The Power then dribbled a full forty yards to score a second but Baildon finished the half with a try in their last move.
The names changed but the malaise remained in the second half. Tim Leslie and Gabes added experience to the backs as they tried to work some early openings. James Poll crashed over and Tim converted but this only seemed to galvanise Baildon further and as Rob, CJ, Gareth and Greg all retired hurt weary and despondent warriors (Gary, Scotty, Billy) returned to the unequal struggle. There was plenty of individual endeavour but not enough support or calmness in possession to put the visitors under enough pressure. Their hard running style and options in support led to continual exposure of Leo’s defence which was unable to withstand such an onslaught no matter how brave.
A game to forget as CJ’s gallant band looks to rally and turn round a somewhat disappointing start to this season.
