Leo’s welcomed their Scottish National League (East) tourists to a cloudy Crag Lane already suffering from the 4th XV malaise of late drop outs and non appearances

Billy’s “Drunk in Northampton” was winning before Josh stole the show with a sleeping injury. Edinburgh didn’t look hung-over enough despite spending the previous night in Newcastle and demonstrated a desire to run the ball at every opportunity during the first phase of the afternoons contest.
The rugby was competitive, sporting, and from the visitors perspective very skilled as The Fozeree kept it flowing and both sides worked hard. Regular early turnovers featured from both sides but it was the superior speed and moves from Edinburgh that made the difference. Their competitiveness at the breakdown shaded that particular contest and often the Leo’s backs were on the back foot as Jake and Ben tried to work some gaps. Resorting to forward conflict Henry the Dog led from the front, ably supported by Si and CJ in the bosh-ups, with Scotty preferring the more genteel driving mauls. Both tactics were the Leo’s yard earners as the backs couldn’t break through the strong Scottish defence. Carl scored Leo’s try, before going off injured. Kinga had already departed with a poorly finger, CJ was concussed but stayed on, JP was even more concussed and left the field. Leo’s never gave up in their pack-based game plan, but sadly the visitors never gave up in their border raiding and try pillaging tactics either to reach the quarter stage of the contest with a healthy lead.
Things changed for the better however with the introduction of the 3 a-side yard of ale contest. The Phil Preece Memorial Yard was toped up with Yorkshire’s finest and Leo’s trounced their opponents with Scotty’s spectacular 51 second effort leading the way and scaring the Scots into yard times better suited to a sundial than The Fozeree’s watch. Jon and Henry made up the winning trio to bring the scores level at 1-1 at half time.
This was quickly followed up by a 1 pint solo sprint, a contest where Leo’s have the unbeatable Henry, who, even after a bit of yard barfing, managed to pulverise Jack McSparrow to give Leo’s a 2-1 lead which they never looked like surrendering.
After a short break the 5-a-side half pint+ broom handle spin and sprint gave the visitors a chance to draw level but a superb all round team effort including the injured JP and Carl gave Leo’s an unassailable 3-1 lead with one opportunity to change the score remaining.
The naked boatrace, with slope-rolling and hill climb was a much tighter affair, but once again the superior drinking skills of the home side prevailed and the victorious Leo’s, led by CJ embarked on a cricket pitch streak before returning swiftly with their “tails” between their legs after deciding not to upset the women and children enjoying the cricket!
More tomfoolery followed before the evening continued through Headingley, to The Palace, and on into town.
The return is planned for February 4th, 5th, and 6th. You have been warned
