On a pleasant afternoon at The Crag JP assembled enough riches to donate Jon and Billy to the 3rd XV and still have some leftovers for a bench.

After a gentleman’s excuse me regarding the contesting of the scrums Leo’s began in their time honoured disorganised fashion and were soon assembling in their 22 to watch Mods go for an early 3-pointer. A terrible slice left the scores level as Leo’s decided to give it a go. Thommo was supported up front by Si H (broken shoulder) and Big Steve (broken neck?) as their opponents were lifted and driven back in a double hooker breaking opening fifteen minutes. Despite this superiority the lineouts were a shambles as Scotty’s only consistency was in not finding his jumpers. Scraps were snaffled up by Matt to release young Jake and the backs who found it hard to break through the youthful but strong Mods defence. Ball was needlessly flipped away as the T+P fanciness shone through. The packs drives from Thommo, Newsh and JP were wasted with careless cleaning or sloppy hands as plenty of pressure refused to be converted into points despite a 10 minute spell in the Mods 22. Whether it was Leo’s profligacy or the Weeny Refs sympathetic decisions the scoreboard remained still for most of the half. The pacier visiting backs eventually worked enough space for a try out wide and Leo’s reassembled for the second half 0-5 down.
After a somewhat half hearted call to arms the refreshed Leo’s lineup finally began to click. Strong drives from Newsh, Dolph and Thommo were ably supported in clearing out and recycling by CJ, Ray and the bleeding Scotty. So profuse was the flow from a curious back wound that Scotty was in fear of an assault from the Eagle being trained on the cricket pitch! The backs joined the fray with Andrew and Lloyd running in hard and Tom and Fedex delivering the pace out wide. Eventually an attack was stopped short; Scotty secured and set up before being driven over with Matt but unable to ground the ball. From the uncontested scrum Dolph was driven over and Jake added the extras for a lead. Mods replied with a penalty as they were happy to kick for goal rather than try to break through the Leo’s line. At 7-8 Leo’s responded with more pressure and Fedex scored out wide. Mods piled back and worked a fine opening with the winger odds on to score before Carl made a do or die tackle and the chance was squandered. With a narrow lead more drives and support recycling caused havoc in the Mods defence and a kickable penalty was awarded. Giddy Carl grabbed the ball and ran off into the visitors defence to donate possession and the chance of a 7 point lead was lost.
Naturally Mods couldn’t believe their luck and chanced their arm with a final interpassing move which was repelled three or four times before the space was made for a match winning try. There was still time for Leo’s to embark on a valiant but fruitless final raid with Tom going close before the game was brought to a halt and another victory slipped thought the insecure hands of the 4th XV.
