A glorious sunny day welcomed the players to The Crag for the early kick off against neighbours Aireborough.

As is traditional the visitors were out doing drills before Leo’s had fully assembled, with Big Steve claiming he never got the early kick-off call but just managing to arrive on the pitch for the first scrum. Leo’s had The Portly Magician creating illusions of competence at both 9 and 10, confusing Robbo and Eags either side of him. The pack looked sturdy and also mobile, while the backs decided they had a move to use this week.
Leo’s conceded their early try as the club wide malaise of slow starts permeates every level. Not too disheartened by this regular occurrence the home side set about the task with verve and vigour to notch up a try from Fedex who was delivering a girlfriend impressing performance on the wing. Aireborough returned the compliment and so the scene was set for a game where scores were exchanged at will and neither side was able to edge more than a score ahead until the final ten minutes. Leo’s selection of four first half tries were a delightful mixture featuring a kick off chase/secure and speedy support(Carl and JP), a teasing miss-pass and looping run (Eags and Tom) and “The Move” from Eags and Andrew B. The forwards battled hard for possession and were delighted that the backs and back row were working so harmoniously. Defence needed a bit of attention though as the game turned round at 22-22.
With Jon Mills, Kenroy and Batman revitalising the home side the second half was a more ordered affair as the pack worked their drives from Scotty’s lineouts and Carls catching to make the hard yards. Great support from Thommo, CJ and JP made further inroads with Scotty also adding some yardage. A “held up” and some light infringement from Aire kept the Leo’s vanguard out before Carl eventually picked and went from a 5 yard scrum. By this time the excellent referee (P. Martin) had lost patience with Aire and sent their hooker off for a 10 minute rest/ Aire actually came back into the game when a man down and Leo’s lead was trimmed to two points as the epic encounter moved into the closing stages. It was left to young Jake to burst through out wide, kick on and touchdown to give Leo’s just enough breathing space to run down the clock and secure a well earned, hard fought and sportingly played out victory.
