A pre-match swim in The North Sea at Whitley Bay freshened up Leo’s following their night of Newcastle excesses in preparation for their tour match against a steely Consett side.

Leo’s featured unfamiliar players in unfamiliar positions but were able to demonstrate excellent support running and recycling to maintain an unusually highly paced and skilled performance to outclass the home side on a blustery Spring day in Derwentside.
A slick backs move with Joe Derry running the lines released Billy for the first score quickly followed by Joe himself getting on the score sheet. The Leo’s pack heroes were Scotty, JP and Kenroy in the first period as balls were won against the head, a Scotty lineout steal, and plenty of secure service was provided for the backs where Kinga, and Si Winters made good use of possession. Kinga made a boshing break and when finally tackled Scotty was in support to finish the move with well timed support running. Consett scored a quick reply before Joe and Billy added more tries to put the hosts back in their place. The back line constantly created space with intelligent lines and moves which Consett were unable to counter. The pack was augmented by the ageless Tony Mentlak as more turnovers were secured by his tenacious work at the breakdown.
The Fozaree kept everyone honest with a firm whistling performance as Leo’s took control of an entertaining high speed try-fest. JP blatantly ignored the no kicking tour rule, twice, to score a couple of scruffy kick and chase tries whilst the Kinga Kenroy Kombo (KKK?) pitched in with a try apiece. Scotty kicked one conversion and Joe two before Billy bullied his way to the kicking tee and missed the rest! Joe, who marshalled the backs with all his 2nd XV experience ended top scorer with four tries, closely followed by the calamity kicker Billy with three.
Handshakes all round and a stroll to their HQ/Social club followed with discounted beer, free leftover food from a Christening, and a proper rugby meal to bolster the tourists before another night on The Toon.
